Title page "Summers' journal". - Text of copybooks containing notes and stories about visits to the Native Americans of Puget Sound and Western Oregon between the years 1871-81, plus drawings of 160 of his artifacts from the Pacific Northwest. Note from the text, "In 1897, as death approached, his only option for avoiding dispersal was the offer of an English priest to convey the collection to the British Museum. Some 556 items of it now reside there, 160 of them from the Pacific Northwest." In the BM the items are known as the Freer Collection, (from Rev. S.C. Freer).
