In this work some of Shilling's manuscript material held in the Institute is published for the first time. His essays on the numerically small peoples of Dagestan were planned to appear in "Narody Kavkaza" / red. M.O. Kosven in the series "Narody mira", 1960-62; they were, however, rejected at the last moment before publication. Back cover displays the institution responsible for the work: Rossiiskaia Akademiia Nauk, Institut Etnologii i Antropologii im. N.N. Miklukho-Maklaia, Koordinatsionno-Metodologicheskii TSentr Prikladnoi Etnografii, TSentr Russkikh Issledovanii.
